A Study of Sheep Nematode Populations on Ten Commercial Properties on Kangaroo Island, South Australia

چکیده

South Australian studies to investigate the epidemiology of nematode parasites of sheep have been carried out at Kybybolite, Minnipa and Turretfield ( Brown et al. 1985; Pullman et al. 1988). The epidemiological differences between Kybybolite and Turretfield are being investigated further. Recently, resistance to major groups of anthelmintics has been detected in sheep nematode populations in South Australia (Beveridge et al. 1990). The present study was undertaken to deermine seasonal fluctuations in sheep nematode populations on Kangaroo Island and the effects anthelmintic resistance has on the control of sheep nematodes in-commercial flocks.

Small population size and extremely low levels of genetic diversity in island populations of the platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus

Genetic diversity generally underpins population resilience and persistence. Reductions in population size and absence of gene flow can lead to reductions in genetic diversity, reproductive fitness, and a limited ability to adapt to environmental change increasing the risk of extinction. Island populations are typically small and isolated, and as a result, inbreeding and reduced genetic diversi...

Koala Retrovirus in Free-Ranging Populations — Prevalence

The prevalence of koala retrovirus (KoRV) provirus (DNA) and the average number of proviral insertions per cell vary in different free-ranging koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) populations across Australia. Populations in the northern states of Queensland and New South Wales have 100% proviral prevalence and mean proviral copy number of 140–165 per cell. In contrast, the proviral prevalence in the...

Breeding Phenology and Behavior of Rosenberg’s Goanna (Varanus rosenbergi) on Kangaroo Island, South Australia

—For 16 years, we have observed and recorded seasonal life cycles of individual free-ranging Rosenberg’s Goannas, Varanus rosenbergi. These monitor lizards are normally solitary except during their annual summer breeding cycle. Activities and behaviors were documented from precourtship through to pairing, courtship, copulation, selecting and excavating an incubation chamber, egg laying, and fin...

A Genome Scan and Linkage Disequilibrium Analysis among Chromosomal Races of the Australian Grasshopper Vandiemenella viatica

In the past decade the interest surrounding the role of recombination in speciation has been re-kindled by a new generation of chromosomal speciation models that invoke the recombination-suppression properties of some types of chromosomal rearrangement. A common prediction of recombination-suppression models is that gene exchange between diverging populations will be more restricted in regions ...

Possible application of a nematophagous fungus as a biological control agent of parasitic nematodes on commercial sheep farms in South Africa.

Biological control of parasitic nematodes of livestock is currently under development and represents another tool that may be integrated into helminth parasite control strategies. This paper presents a brief introduction to commercial sheep farming in South Africa and currently available nematode parasite control methods. These include the FAMACHA clinical assay, strategies of pasture managemen...
